A MESSAGE TO AFRICAN AMERICANS

I am supporting two great candidates who are African American: Kent Keel, for Pierce County Auditor, and Tony Moore, for State Senate, next door in the 30th district. Kent is running in a non partisan race, and Tony is running as a Republican. These two guys are thinking outside the usual partisan box!  Best wishes to those two, who are men of intelligence, energy, vision and faith.

A MESSAGE TO MY ROMAN CATHOLIC BROTHERS AND SISTERS

     I intend to contend earnestly for the votes of the Catholics in the 27th district. I support the pro-life position for which the Church stands. I do this not just because it is an article of faith, although it is that. I take that position for two additional reasons.
     First, as science teaches us, at the moment of conception, the DNA from the mother and the father combine to form an individual with its own unique DNA. That new life is separate and distinct genetically from the mother. Thus, the primary justification given for the right to abortion—that the mother should have control over her own body—empirically fails. The new, genetically different human person being formed is clearly NOT just her body. She should not have the right, morally or legally, to extinguish that new life. Abortion is analogous is slavery. Any time one human being is given carte blanche authority over another human being, bad things happen. Just as the Supreme Court once said that the negro had no rights the white man was required to respect, it has also said that a fetus has limited rights that the mother, father or the state is required to respect. 
     Second, our national history is opposed to a right to abortion. The seminal document of our national existence, the Declaration of Independence, says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men… .” The right to life is listed first, because without life, no other rights are of any consequence. Government’s duty is to protect life. The idea that the founders (who were overwhelmingly men of faith) would have adopted a constitution that was in derogation of the primacy of life principle is unthinkable. Thus for nearly two hundred years, no right to abortion was found in the Constitution. And when it was, the Supreme Court justices could not agree on where in the document this newly discovered “right” was located.
     Now because the Supreme Court has enshrined that right in the Constitution, the states are not permitted to legislate on the issue except around the margins. And I don’t believe those margins are likely to be visited by the legislature in the near future. So politically, why would I bring up this issue? The reason I do is to show the Catholic voters in my district that we share a conviction on that most fundamental of issues. And because of that shared belief, and because the Democratic party is overwhelmingly secular and pro-choice, I ask you to rethink the usual Catholic-as-Democrat vote. Catholics should not be a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democratic party!

A MESSAGE TO YOUNG PEOPLE
 

     It’s time for some straight talk to the under 30 generation. You are about to become the first generation of Americans who do not have it better than the previous generation. How did this happen? In the name of compassion and fairness, liberal polititians have sold America on a huge nanny-state government which proposes to take care of all of us, right down to the Federal government providing us with digital converters for our televisions. (Is that what the  founders had in mind?)  What they are doing is selling dependence and buying votes.  The more people that are dependent on the government, the more people will have to vote for liberal politicians who will keep the gravy train running. However, the train is grinding to a halt. The cost of all these programs—Social security, medicare, medicaid, farm subsidies, earmarks, "jobs" bills—is about to overwhelm our ability to pay for them. Social security is a giant Ponzi scheme, not unlike that which recently sent Bernie Madoff to prison for life. We can either accept some pain slowly, by downsizing the entitlement system at our discretion now, or didther until the fiscal tidal wave swamps us in a few short years. Mark Tapscott of the Washington Examiner says the following about the “Millenium generation.” Thanks to their government:

  • Their federal taxes will hit unprecedented levels as Washington props up Social Security, Medicare and other federal entitlement programs. So will state and local taxes, thanks to similarly generous pensions for teachers, cops, firemen, and bureaucrats.
  • Good health care will be harder to get for middle class Millennials and their kids, thanks to government rationing of medical services.
  • With a no-growth, high-tax, “green economy,” entrepreneurial opportunities will be scarce, new jobs rare, and standards of living falling for the first time in American history. Most things will cost more, everyday tasks like getting to work and grocery shopping will be more tedious, and the general quality of life will be noticeably less pleasant.
Those of you who are used to solving problems with your laptop, internet access and social networking know that you are the equal of “a progressive government dispatching reams of bureaucratic edicts, legions of bureaucrats, and tons of tax dollars.” (Tapscott)  Community organizers have no experience in producing wealth, only lobbying to take money from the productive and giving it to the unproductive. "Today, wanting someone else's money is called 'need,' wanting to keep your own money is called 'greed,' and 'compassion' is when politicians arrange the transfer." (Joe Sobran, quoted in Politically Incorrect Guide to American History). So be very skeptical of politicians who want to buy your vote with promises of government programs to take care of you. The national debt just hit 13 TRILLION dollars. As a state representative I will demand a frugal state government and do all I can to shrink the bloated Federal government.  Declare Your Independence!
